We finally have a date...May 22nd! But there's something we don't have--a theme. This time around the Hive is going to do things a little differently. We're throwing out a few of our favorite ideas to see "what the people want!" Vote below:

We're not just literary experts in the hive...we also have other interests. Today we'll be exploring one of our favorite things in the world: TEDed! It's science crunch time in the class of 2021 corridor, so Ms. Smith talked to Mr. Escobar and found some amazing informative videos on scientific topics that we were curious about. *It's also a great time to get some animation ideas as we prepare for our big meeting with Andrew Gardner (of BrainPOP) on Monday! A few Hive scholars held a forum on assessment and discovered that there are lots of ways to "test" knowledge. #mindblown Today, in preparation for our collaboration with BrainPOP (and the awesome Andrew Gardner) we began studying the art of stop-motion animation. It's not at easy as it looks, and the scholars from last year were faced with that reality as they tried to film their scripts. This year, we're growing our schemata on stop-motion animation prior to coming up with our BrainPOP video topics or writing our scripts. Our goal is to write a script that supports OUR unique vision for BrainPOP. We watched a TEDed on animation and then came up with [very] short stories to film. These stories, while tiny, still had rising action, a climax, and a resolution. Sometimes really cool things come in really small packages. Here are some random examples of what Hive scholars created on a whim: This is just the beginning...don't worry there's more! The Hive scholars will be creating longer stop-motion animation videos very soon.
Yesterday, the Hive Society site had almost ONE THOUSAND visitors (907 to be exact). We're hoping this is just the beginning and that there will be even bigger days. #thankyoufans #whymustwehashtageverything
It's true, it's true...Ms. Smith WON at the Austin Under 40 Awards in the 'Youth & Education' category! Here are some things you should know about the special night: 1) We weren't allowed to go [silent sob]. Even thought it says "under 40" it also means you have to be over 20 (at least that's what Ms. Smith says). 2) Ms. Smith's parents came in town for the fancy party. 3) Mr. McNinch (our very favorite substitute) even went to support our Ms. Smith! We thought it was unfair that he got to go and we didn't. This picture is pretty typical of Ms. Smith...she said she was trying to get Mr. McNinch to curtsy. We barely even recognize him in his suit and glasses...that's not what "peaches" wears to DND club. 4) They went to the super huge party and the most miraculous thing happened...MS. SMITH WON! She looks so tiny on that big stage. She didn't even stand behind the podium with all the flowers, which didn't surprise us at all. Ms. Smith doesn't usually follow the rules. Hayden thinks that it's better she did this--that way everyone could see her "fabulous red dress." *Hayden is also pleased to hear that Ms. Smith kept her heels on all night long. They were an "important piece to her outfit." 5) She gave a speech which was pretty funny to us. It was also really sweet. We should have had her practice, but we didn't even know if she was going to win. Here are some highlights from her speech: -She started off with a shout out to the kiddos in first block who wrote her recommendation letter. Read it if you want! *Below are the awesome writers who put it together holding the glass trophy -She talks about us a lot -She mentions Ms. Lloyd (who was there, too) -She refrained from breaking into song -She skittered/skipped/bounced off stage at the end. It was our very favorite part because she looked exactly like she always does to us. Other people were probably serious, but that's just not how Ms. Smith celebrates. 6) Ms. Smith finally found out who the mystery nominator was. Her name is Ashley Martin and apparently she follows our blog and all the cool things we do in the Hive. We're writing her a thank you letter because we're really grateful that she thought about our teacher and took the time to nominate her. If she's reading this--you can come visit us anytime you want! Thanks again! 7) While she didn't do "the Lion King/Jalapeño" on stage like James begged her to, she did it afterward at the photobooth. Make sure you hit 'play' on the audio before looking at the picture. #epicsmith 8) Because we weren't allowed to come, a lot of other people came to support our Ms. Smith. Ms. Lloyd (our principal) is on the right side of the picture, too! Doesn't she look nice? 9) Just this morning, a brand new story about Ms. Smith and the Hive Society was posted on the Examiner. Neuryth's dog (Alvin) even made it into the article in a picture! And so did sweet Beatrix, who we miss every day. Here's the article: click here, yo! We love you, Ms. Smith! We are so excited you won...even though winning isn't everything. Now we just have to find a place to put the fancy-pants glass trophy! #stillNOTaCEO
Here are some random happy things that represent how we feel after our two days of testing...we couldn't decide our favorites, so we're posting them all: Happiness #1: Simon came in from Oklahoma and surprised us. Ms. Smith cried...but they were happy tears. Happiness #2: We discovered that Ms. Smith's dog--the Mitchasaurus--is a breathing version of the gas-powered Google Robot. Ms. Smith cried again...this time because she couldn't stop laughing. Happiness #3: The miniature zen garden given to Ms. Smith after she passed her graduate school verbal comps. Thanks, Dr. Saunders...we love it! Happiness #4: Crunch-time-champion-sashes were cool. And no, you're not seeing double--the twins dominated in two blocks. #Joshuaphotobomb Happiness #5: Neuryth brought Bebe Alvin to the Hive after hours. We think we're going to make his visits a regular occurrence. Ms. Smith thinks his middle name should be "Smith"...we're letting her think this is a possibility. Happiness #6: Tonight, Ms. Smith goes to a fancy party where she is a finalist! It's called Austin Under 40 and we want her to win the whoooooole thing. Some of us even wrote her a recommendation letter to let them know how we felt. BM and RR picked out a pretty necklace to go with her dress and we think she'll look fabulous. Good luck, Ms. Smith! You're already a winner to us! That's all folks! We hope it brought some happiness to your day. #NOTaCEO
