Feminism TEDtalk: Digital Forum
Stereotypes vs. Positive Images
'A Real Boy' Poem
Last week, after reading and analyzing Oliver Button is a Sissy and an article about the lack of adventurous female Lego figurines, Hive scholars held a 3-part forum on gender stereotyping. The forums led to eye-opening conversations in which scholars discussed personal, social, and literary connections. Our quest to understand gender stereotyping didn't stop there...on Monday we had two special guests come and share their research on athlete stereotyping in the media. It was truly eye-opening! Today, scholars will continue the conversation as they interact with 4 different stations:

Check out what one of the Hive's brilliant scholars put together. Thanks, CM...you're such a tech-whiz! It was a long and restful Spring Break, but we're glad to be back and buzzing in the Hive. Here are some things for all of our followers and fans to look forward to:
-More StoryCorps podcasts on our HivexRadio -Our spring TEDxHive -The reveal of our literature circle social change projects -Photo updates from the running club -The release of our RadioLab podcast about force, motion, and geology -More interaction with 'the Collective' -A poetry forum for everyone -Our stop-motion animation collaboration with Andrew Gardner from BrainPOP -Dance parties with tiny ponies We look forward to all of the amazing learning experiences ahead of us, and we hope you'll follow along in our journey. Ms. Smith is finally back from her SXSWedu conference, and while we are glad she had time to brag about us for FOUR whole days, we're even happier that she's back at home in the Hive. Here are some of the coolio things she did. 1. Ms. Smith went to the Alamo Drafthouse and saw a documentary (which is an expository text with narrative elements) about kids that love to sing. 2. She got quality time with Ms. Holmes...which made us super jealous. Apparently they talked about us, though, which makes it a little better. 3. She went to a panel on SEL--which is social emotional learning--and saw our superintendent, Dr. Carstarphen. They talked about all kinds of things that we're already doing in the Hive. 4. That night, she made a wicked looking logo for the Hive. 5. The next day, Ms. Smith and Ms. Holmes were on something called a panel about innovation in the classroom. Basically, they talked about all the chill stuff we do in the Hive. You can see all the pictures here, and the whole video of them bragging about how brilliant we are here. They even took a goofy picture before they went on...it's a little embarrassing. 6. She also met up with her friend, Andrew Gardner, from BrainPOP! Just like the Hive scholars from last year, we're going to make BrainPOP videos of our very own. We're such experts that we can't even decide what we are going to make ours about. I think we are most looking forward to having a google hangout with Andrew and seeing what NYC looks like. He looks like a pretty cool dude. 7. Maybe we'll get to make one of these memes. Looks like a radical demo. 8. Ms. Smith said her favorite part was all the free food. Look at her, Ms. Sparrow, and Ms. Lloyd enjoying their BBQ. #icedtea #yum 9. We thought this picture of downtown Austin was fancy, but Ms. Smith claims that she's glad to be back, and that we're more awesome than free food and cool city views. I guess we're glad to have her back, too. 10. Next year can we come, too????? *This post was crafted by the minds of Mr. Kevin, Makayla, and Felix.
