*A special thanks to Mr. Howard who saved Ms. Smith from spending the rest of her day digging a giant hole. We LOVE you!
While reading the book Ida B in their literature circle, Hive Society Scholars were inspired by the main character and her love of nature (and especially her friends...the trees). Hive Scholars wanted to give back to the environment, so they created a website and reached out to The Great Outdoors Nursery, who graciously donated a live oak. Years from now, the Hive's legacy will live on through the work of these scholars and their gift to the school. WOW! Hive Scholars have outdone themselves with their first round of literature circles for social change. There are a plethora of websites, podcasts, comics, spoken word performances, and even startups that were inspired by amazing books. Throughout the next month, Ms. Smith will be spotlighting each group's project on the website, but if you follow this link to "the scholars" tab, then you can see an overview of all the awesome things happening in the Hive.
Here are two more interviews in the Esperanza Rising immigration series. Fascinating! ....with some after school stop-motion animation. Very impressive, guys! Today we said goodbye to a new friend, Mr. Goldwing (the bird). We had a lovely gathering complete with a William Carlos Williams poem to celebrate his life. You will be missed, Mr. Goldwing.
Ms. Smith and graduated Hive Society Scholars ventured out to the Arboretum Barnes & Noble to share our thoughts and sign some books....it was the BEST day ever.
Block One's Tale of Desperaux literature circle group was inspired by the main character's love of reading. They have officially launched their social-change startup in hopes of collecting books to share with people who don't have access to literature and ultimately, imagination. They also sent out letters to local bookstores to build up their startup charities library. Feel free to visit them at: http://ineedbooksnow.webs.com/
In case you missed it, Ms. Smith was on KXAN talking about the Hive Society (and rocking the Hive's colors) this morning. Here's the link to the segment: http://www.kxan.com/community/new-book-celebrates-american-teachers
SNEAK PEEK of a cultural change literature circle project (Esperanza Rising): If you watched the video below you will understand what we are about to talk about. Below we did an interview on Daira. Daira is an immigrant from Mexico and she came to the United States three months ago. Look for more of our interviews in the next month. How can we create TEDtalks that engage our viewers from the very start? Images? Videos? Silence? Personal narratives? Sound? Well, if you're still stuck, then we can watch some of the experts. |
