Scholar A’s portfolio was one of the more entertaining portfolios to rummage through. His sense of humor and strong voice continue to amaze me, and it is evident in his samples that he has a true gift for words. Scholar A didn’t know he had such a gift for words at the beginning of the year, and was apprehensive to pick up a pencil and start with the first word. One of the more remarkable things that I discovered when looking through his portfolio were sporadic poems that he would write whenever he had free time. They were poignant, smart, and always unexpected. While Scholar A struggled to connect with himself through writing at the beginning of the year, he later became more willing to write from an emotional or sensitive place (as seen in his poem from the polar bear’s perspective). He saw himself as a true writer that wasn’t just about the punch lines and the quirky comments, but one with a wide repertoire. Scholar A would love to become a comic book author. He sees himself as someone who could bring social justice issues into his craft so that the message could reach more people from a familiar interface.
